It’s on the river but way off from the main area so it’s a pretty quiet place to stay. The cigar bar in the basement does get busy on the weekends. Here the husband and I enjoyed a couple of shots of Patron. Yum! I don’t think there is a better tequila in the world. If you know of any, send me some and I’ll check it out.

After checking in and enjoying our Patron, we headed down the street to our favorite sushi place.

I know what you are all thinking, sushi in San Antonio??? Yep, it’s true. This place has some out of this world fantastic sushi. Just look….

If you think you don’t like sushi, you should try that first roll on the left, the San Antonio roll. It’s made with mongolian beef, shrimp, avocado and manchego cheese with a breaded finish, topped with chipotle-mayo sauce and it’s all cooked so you aren’t eating anything raw. The next roll over is the Bitsy roll; eel, smoked salmon, avocado and cucumber wrapped in a combination of cream cheese and shrimp, topped with Ebi Furikake and eel sauce. It was okay but too much cream cheese for me. The husband really liked it though. Now for my favorite, the Spurs roll. It is a special roll that isn’t on the main menu so I can’t post what all is it in but I do remember some mighty tasty tuna wrapped on the outside. The last roll on the right is the Yokonyu special roll; garlic shrimp, cucumber and avocado wrapped with grilled onion and topped with chipotle-mayo sauce. I didn’t taste this one because I was having too much fun with my tuna. You really should try raw tuna some time. When it is done right, it is a heavenly experience. Not fishy at all and just melts like butter in your mouth. Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh……..

Okay, deep breath, where was I…oh yeah…San Antonio and more food and more drinks. After passing out from all the tequila shots and sake, we got up fairly early (for us anyway) and took the trolley over to El Mercado for brunch at Mi Tierra’s.

This place is a San Antonio landmark and should never be missed. It’s open 24 hours and I’ve been known to wait up to two hours for a table.

Of course the husband had to have his menudo.

Yuck! This stuff smells. Remind me next time to sit on the other side of the table. He said it was the best he’d ever had. I’ll take his word on it.

Thank goodness my food arrived shortly after his. I had the wonderful, life-changing, you’ll never want to eat anything else ever again, delicious and tasty Enchiladas de Pollo en Mole. That’s chicken enchiladas with mole sauce (pronounced like moe-lay) for you gringos. Now my mother-in-law makes some really great mole sauce but hers is not quite as chocolaty as this was. I don’t want to say that I liked this version better but man, it was really great. I’ve even had dreams about it since we got back. When I die, I hope to go to a place filled with this mole, tuna, and plenty of Crown Royal.

Mi Tierra’s also has a great bakery with most of your favorite mexican pastries and candy. We were hoping for some cajeta empanadas but all they had were cajeta churros. Tasted okay the next day but would have been better if we’d eaten them fresh.

In case you didn’t know, San Antonio has a great public transportation system, especially the trolley.

It’s only a dollar to ride and you get one free transfer. They run throughout the downtown area mostly along the most popular streets. This one was taking us from the market back to the center of downtown. Then it’s about a 7 or 8 block walk back to our hotel. Not too bad and that helped burn off some of our lunch.

After a nice long nap we decided to head over to the main part of the riverwalk. On this Sunday it wasn’t crowded at all.

Yeah, that’s the husband walking ahead of me. He tends to do that. I’ve yet to figure out why he has to walk so fast. Most of the walk I was alone. This allowed me to take some nice shots of the area.

I know that if we didn’t stop in Durty Nelly’s my mom would have cried. Okay, maybe not cry but surely been disappointed. It is a cool place with character and lots of different beer. So why does my mom like it so much??? She doesn’t drink much at all. She’s not into crowds and group singing. It seems that one of her best friends loved this place. (Thanks Jackie for introducing my mom, and indirectly me, to this little dive.)

All in all it was a great trip even if the traffic through Austin did suck.

Yep, that’s exactly what it is. What a strange winter we’ve had. One day it’s 80 degrees the next we’re getting snow. It’s just crazy. But you know me, I love the snow and wish we had gotten a ton of the white stuff. I just gotta move farther north.

Kobe just isn’t sure about this, or maybe I interrupted his morning dump.

This is Kobe. We got him from my brother-in-law when he got divorced. He is sweet and craves attention. Just watch out for that tail!

This is Sasha. I got her after my sweet Snickers died. Sasha had a rough life before she came to live with me. According to the DFW Cocker Rescue Club, she was found wandering the streets of Ft. Worth. Poor girl. Her favorite activities are growling and sleeping. Even though we call her the growly dog, she can be very sweet.

This is Snow. He belonged to the husband before we were married. I have never been a cat person at all but I totally love this cat. He loves to be hugged, snuggled, petted, brushed, and picked up.

I could not have a post about our pets and leave out Hershey. I tell ya, this was the best dog I’ve ever had and I doubt I’ll ever have one even close to her again. She was fairly mellow when it was required and playful when the time was right. I have a hard time putting it into words just what was so great about this dog. Take my word for it, she was the best. Hershey’s favorite things were giving kisses and belly rubs. She never tired of either.
